The following is from a recent CU press release:
 
Arthur Mintz, a Cornell graduate and local journalist-broadcaster, is the
recipient of the 1994 Cornell/Ben Mintz Media Award.
        The announcement will be made on Thursday evening (Aug. 11) at the
38th annual football-golf outing for media and Big Red gridiron followers.
Given for the 17th time, the award is in honor of the late Ben Mintz,
sports information director at Cornell for 28 years until his retirement in
May 1977.  Ben Mintz died in October 1991.  The award is given to a media
person or someone associated with the media for "exceptional support of
Cornell in particular and to college athletics in general."
        Arthur Mintz, a 1971 Cornell graduate and no relation to the man
the award was named after, is currently Senior Project Leader for Cornell
Information Technologies/Information Resources.  As a journalist, he has
been a sports columnist for the Ithaca Times since 1978.  Prior to that, he
covered softball and Ithaca Stars hockey for the Ithaca Journal from
1975-78.  He is the editor of The Cornell Hockey Record Book published in
1987.  In broadcasting, Mintz has worked as a color analyst for both WHCU
and WTKO radio stations, and has done play-by-play on Ithaca Amateur
Softball games and on the 1975 North-South college lacrosse game.
        Since 1983-84, Mintz has been the official scorer for Cornell men's
hockey games the public address announcer since the 1987-88 season.  He is
also the public address announcer for Big Red football, a position he has
held since 1987.  Since the 1990-91 season, Arthur has been the Cornell
sports information representative for men's hockey road games.  He served
10 years on the board of directors of the Cornell Hockey Boosters
Association and was the organization's newsletter editor.
        The first recipients of the media award, given in 1978, were Ken
Van Sickle, former sports editor of the Ithaca Journal, and the late Sam
Woodside, former sports director at WHCU.  The winner in 1979 was Arnie
Burdick, former executive sports editor of the Syracuse Herald-Journal.  Al
Mallette, former sports editor of the Elmira Star Gazette, and John Fox,
sports editor of the Binghamton Press, were presented with the award in
1980.  In 1981, Leo Pinckney, former sports editor of the Auburn Citizen
was the award winner.  Former Cornell director of visual services Sol
Goldberg and retired graphic arts designer Frank Hurtt were the recipients
in 1982.
        Bill Waters, former editor of the Ithaca Journal, was the 1983
award winner, and Ellen Harkness, a secretary in the Cornell sports
information office for over 20 years, received the award in 1984.  Tom
Joseph, operations manager of radio station WHCU, was honored in 1985, and
the late Bob Kane, dean emeritus of physical education and athletics at
Cornell was the recipient in 1986.  Dave Wohlhueter, sports information
director for the Big Red since 1977, received the award in 1987, and Bill
Wallace, sports writer with the New York Times, was the winner in 1988.
Dick Johnston, a retired sports writer with the Buffalo Evening News, was
the 1989 recipient, and John Marcham, retired editor of the Cornell Alumni
News, was lauded in 1990.  In 1991, Scott Conroe, sports writer with the
Syracuse Herald-Journal, was honored and the 1992 recipient was Frank
Benson, sports editor of the Ithaca Journal.  Last year's recipient was
Michael Barcless, NewsCenter 7, in Ithaca.
