    PC Names Coach
Providence College has named Paul Pooley the 10th hockey
coach in the history of its program.

Some information gleaned from the news release
announcing Pooley's appointment:

Pooley has been at Lake Superior for the last three years,
serving at Associate Head Coach for the 93-94 national
champions. The Lakers have played in the national
championship game in each of his three seasons under
Jeff Jackson.

Pooley is a native of Exeter, Ontario. He was CCHA
player of the year as a senior at Ohio State in 83-84.
He was also the leading scorer in college hockey that
year. Pooley played three years of minor league
hockey and served as an assistant at Ohio State for
three years before his move to LSSU.

He graduated cum laude from Ohio State with degrees
in marketing and accounting. Pooley was an Academic
All-American in 1983-84.

PC President Rev. Philip Smith, O.P. said, "Providence
sought a coach supportive of its mission as an educational
institution who could also lead our ice hockey program to
the highest competitive level possible. Paul's academic
background obviously underscores his commitment to this
mission and his ice hockey accomplishments prove his
ability to balance excellence on two fronts. We are very
pleased with today's announcement and excited about
tomorrow's prospects."

Pooley said, "I'm very excited about the opportunity to
coach at Providence College. It is a school with a great
academic and hockey tradition. I look forward to being
a part of it."

Pooley, who is 33, replaces Mike McShane, who resigned
in April.
