Thanks for asking, Dave! Both Twin Cities papers had more sports gossip updates
on it yesterday, saying essentially the same thing. (I tried to post the info
yesterday, but had a connection problem. I never got a copy back, so I assume
this is not duplicate info.)

Sid "Scud"* Hartman wrote in yesterday's (6/28/94) Star Tribune:

Gophers hockey coach Doug Woog said he was going to ask Herb Brooks if he had
any interest in replacing Mark Mazzoleni as his assistant. "I haven't talked to
Doug but I doubt that I would have any interest in the job," Brooks said. Woog
also plans to talk to former Gophers Craig Sarner and Mike Guentzel and Olympic
hockey coach Dave Peterson.
{end quoted stuff}

Both papers seem to verify that Woog has said he'll talk to Brooks. I still
find it surprising that Woog would expose himself to the possibility of an ego
clash with Herbie. Guentzel is the Omaha head coach in the USHL already
mentioned in the original sports gossip column quote from Charley Walters in the
St. Paul paper. His disadvantage in this matter (in addition to the fact that
he was the first guy *I* thought of...) is that he was a defenseman, as was
Gophers assistant Bill Butters. Sarner was a forward who was coaching in
Germany a couple years ago. Dave Peterson has the advantage of being a former
goalie, as someone will be needed to take over Mazz's former duties working with
the goalies.
