In the Boston Globe, the list of the 1994 National Rankings was posted, as
compiled by the Sports News Service.

(I will use some inane stats afterwards)

1 Catholic Memorial, MA (23-1)
2 Bloomington Jefferson, Minn (26-1-1)
3 Detroit Catholic Central, Mich (25-1-2)
4 Mt. St. Charles, RI (23-2-1)
5 Moorhead, Minn (25-3)
6 Hanover, NH (22-3)
7 Arlington Catholic, MA (22-4)
8 Midland, Mich (25-1-1)
9 Arlington, MA (22-2)
10 Elk River, Minn (23-1-1)
11 West Haven, Conn (21-3-2)
12 Duluth East, Minn (24-4)
13 Framingham, MA (18-3-1)
14 South St. Paul, Minn (23-5)
15 Lewiston St. Dominic's, Maine (21-6)
16 St. John's Prep (Danvers), MA (18-3-1)
17 St. Paul Hill-Murray, Minn (21-4)
18 Canton, N.Y. (26-2-2)
19 Matignon, MA (18-6)
20 Lakewood, St. Edward, Ohio (29-2-1)

The article on an earlier page reads:

"CATHOLIC MEMORIAL HOCKEY NO. 1 IN NATION"

"Ten weeks after winning its fifth consecutive state hockey championship and
ninth in the last 10 years, Catholic Memorial was ranked the top high school
team in the nation by the National Sports News Service.
The Hockey News, Hockey Night in Boston and publications in Minneapolis and
Wisconsin had input in the poll.
It was the third time in four years that CM has been ranked No. 1. It
finished third a year ago. The man who built this perennial powerhouse, Bill
Hanson, was named coach of the year.
`It's like the NCAA football poll: you would like to see a playoff instead,
but what can you do?' said Hanson, whose team was 23-1. `I'm certainly not
going to complain about being No. 1. It gives a lot of credibility to the
school.'
Although the West Roxbury school's dominance has been evident for the last
decade, this year's edition took it to another level, outscoring tournament
opponents, 30-4. The only blemish in 24 games was a 4-2 loss to St. John's
Prep Feb 12."

Some inane stats:

When broken down by state:

Mass: 6 (#1, 7, 9, 13, 16, and 19)
Minn: 6 (#2, 5, 10, 12, 14, and 17)

Mich: 2 (#3 and 8)

R.I.: 1 (#4)
N.H.: 1 (#6)
Conn: 1 (#11)
Maine: 1 (#15)
N.Y.: 1 (#18)
Ohio: 1 (#20)

So, according to this poll, Mass. and Minn. run away with strength of high
school hockey. (gee, shock there.) :-) (remember, you heard it here first!) :-)

The fact that New England put 10 teams into the top 20 has my father clammoring
for the "old New England Tourney." My understanding is that they would take
the top team from each of the non-Mass NE states, and then take the 2 top EMass
teams and the top WMass team and put 'em in an 8 team tourney.

Considering that, using the same set-up, #1, #4, #6, #7, and #15 would all be
competing, it would be one heck of a tourney.

Not much else I can say... oh yeah... college hockey content...

well, the three top players from #1 CM are going to BU.
the top graduating player from #7 AC is going to Maine.
the top player from #9 Arlington has chosen not to go to college.
the top player from #16 St. John's Prep has chosen to go to UNH.
the top players from #13 Framingham will be good div I players if they prep a
  year.
the top player from #19 Matignon is a freshman.

By the way, anyone who knows Mt. St. Charles, where are their players going?
Are their top players mostly underclassmen?

Thanks,
