A game that MSU looked like it had wrapped up early in the second period slipped
away and became another disappointing loss to a team that MSU should easily
beat. A hard-hitting first period, especially from the Spartans led to a total
of 50 minutes in penalties being called. The calls, however, were very incon-
sistent. At the 12:07 mark, Petterle watched Carter being held by Blum for
nearly 30 seconds at the UIC blue line before he called penalties. It seemed
like he was waiting for Carter to retaliate so he could send them both off the
ice. Lots of extracurriculars in front of both nets, especially in the first
two periods.

The Spartans essentially handed the game to UIC in the second period. MacDon-
ald's goal early in the second came on very sloppy play by the Spartans in their
own zone on the power play, which saw all five Spartans stand around and watch
UIC score. Blum's goal in the second came off a shot from the point that Van-
staalduinen deflected with his stick over Buzak's shoulder. In the third, the
game winner came when Buzak couldn't cover the puck in front of the crease due
to the fact that he was worried about the UIC player who had been pushed toward
the net. Brenner simply beat him to the puck and lifted it over him.

The Spartans will now probably have to win three in a row to keep their NC$$
hopes alive. A loss tonight or tomorrow night and the Spartans most likely will
stay home for the NC$$ Tourney, watching from the stands at Munn Arena while
six other teams play for the right to be National Champions.
