Summary:

Clarkson came back from down 3-1 to beat Union in overtime at Achilles
Rink Friday night. It was a very entertaining game that really could
have gone either way. A good crowd, probably about 1/3 Clarkson fans,
definitely got their money's worth.

Clarkson scored the only goal of a well-played first period before
Union took their lead during the second. After the first Clarkson
goal a few idiots threw bananas onto the ice, but there were only
about 5 or 10 of them, and they were cleaned up quickly. Russ
Monteith tied it for the Dutchmen when he slapped a pass from Troy
Stevens past Clarkson goalie Jason Currie. Reid Simonton gave Union
the lead a few seconds later on a goal that was originally credited to
Monteith. Monteith was awarded an assist on the goal. Monteith
extended the Dutchmen lead to 3-1 with a great individual effort.
Monteith was breaking into the zone and seemed to be taken out of the
play by a Clarkson defenseman. But he was still able to get off a
shot that got past Currie. Under 10 seconds after that, Simonton was
sent to the box for a bad penalty away from the play. It took the
Knights just 10 seconds to take advantage and cut the lead to 3-2
after 2.

The 3rd period was mostly the Mike Gallant show. Gallant stopped 17
of the 18 shots he faced during a third period dominated mostly by
Clarkson. Clarkson got the tying goal on a power play with Chris Ford
in the box for yet another bad penalty away from the play. Union's
4-man box broke down when the 2 forwards both tried to poke the puck
out of the zone, allowing Clarkson to get a serious manpower advantage
in front of Gallant. Steve Palmer scored the tying goal on a rebound.
The Knights had a few good chances to take the lead in regulation, the
best of which ended up in a shot off the crossbar that deflected up to
the roof. Gallant kept the game alive more than once with some great
saves.

The overtime began with the teams skating 4-on-4 because of some late
hitting near the end of the 3rd. Under a minute into the overtime,
Union had a golden opportunity to win the game. Currie was taken out
of the play and the puck was sent through the crease where a Dutchmen
player was trying to poke it into the completely open net. Only a
great play by a Clarkson defenseman to prevent the puck from being
poked in kept the game alive. Clarkson came back the other way, and
Marko Tuomainen wrapped one between Gallant's legs for the win.

I wanted to make sure I mentioned the Clarkson Pep Band. They were
very good. Of all the bands that have come to Achilles in the past
few years, this may have been the best performance. And I understand
that they were only about half-strength.

Union holds on to 10th place with their record of 3-9-1 in the league,
7-9-2 overall. Clarkson moved ahead of RPI into 4th place with a
7-3-3 league record, 11-5-3 overall. Clarkson and RPI will meet
tonight in Troy, and St. Lawrence will be at Union.
