Summary:

Everything was all set for a great hockey night at Achilles Rink.
Sellout crowd for the first RPI game at Achilles with classes in
session since '88. Some Union fans couldn't seem to keep themselves
quiet during the Star Spangled Banner.. I like the new tradition of
"Oh, say can *U* see..", in the spirit of Cornell's "red" and
Clarkson's "knight", but the rest of the screaming was really
disrepectful. Unfortunately when the game started what we got was,
from the Union view, one of the most boring hockey games I've ever
seen. RPI took a 4-goal first period lead and Union never got much
going after that.

The Dutchmen came out flying in the first few minutes, and put some
good pressure on Neil Little. But at 4:11, RPI's Eric Perardi put
them up 1-0. RPI proceeded to build a 5-1 lead. On Union's goal, the
annual oranges came from the crowd toward Little. Not nearly as many
as in the past, so I guess the extra security helped. Late in the
period, RPI's Kelly Askew was called for a 5-minute major penalty
after hitting Jay Prentice from behind. But Union took 2 minors of
its own, and RPI ended up scoring a 4-on-3 power play goal.

By the second period, both teams seemed to be getting just as bored
with all of this as the crowd. RPI scored the only 2 goals of the
period to take a 7-1 lead into the 3rd period.

The crowd was already getting thin early in the third when Union's
Reid Simonton put a hard check on Craig Hamelin in the corner. A pane
of glass shattered, delaying the game for another 25 minutes or so,
and even more people left. When play finally resumed, Mike Gallant
saved a few good RPI chances, and Jeff Jiampetti finally got Union
back on the board late.

This was an all-around bad performance by Union. RPI is a good team,
but they weren't all that impressive in this game. Even the showing
of the RPI fans was much less impressive than in past years. The RPI
band was smaller - a far cry from the band that visited last year. I
guess the fact that RPI is still on break had a lot to do with that.
Union also lost leading scorer Chris Ford with a separated shoulder in
the first period. Ford may be able to return next weekend.

Summary:

What a difference. After the boring game the night before, this one
was much more fun to watch. Overall, RPI played a very bad game.
They couldn't pass, missed some shots that really should have gone in,
and played some poor defense. If not for the outstanding play of Neil
Little, this game could have been completely different.

The first period was the Neil Little and Mike Gallant show. Little
stopped all 17 Union shots, while Gallant made all 13 saves he needed
to make. Little was especially impressive during a 90-second 5-on-3
advantage for the Dutchmen, during which they kept nearly constant
pressure, but couldn't beat him.

Little kept up his play in the second period, again stopping all 9
Union shots. Mike Gallant was a victim of a few defensive breakdowns,
as he allowed goals on a breakaway and a 3-on-1. It looked like the
Dutchmen might be ready to pack it in, now down 2 and with Little
stopping everything they could throw at him.

The Dutchmen started the 3rd period on a power play, and took just 14
seconds to score and cut the lead to 2-1. Union's Cory Holbrough,
replacing the injured Chris Ford on the top line, banged away at the
puck in front of Little to get on the board. Just a few minutes
later, Troy Stevens found Scott Boyd open at the corner of the net,
and Boyd put it past Little to tie the game at 2. RPI regained the
lead on Xavier Majic's goal, but Union took advantage of another power
play to come right back. Troy Stevens was thrown out of the faceoff
circle, replaced by Cory Holbrough. Holbrough won the faceoff back to
Stevens. Stevens sent it out to Reid Simonton at the right point.
Holbrough cut back to the middle, took a perfect feed from Simonton
and fired it past Little. Union started to fall apart a bit late in
the game, with RPI putting on some good pressure. Gallant finally
allowed the winning goal at 18:48 - Craig Richardson's second goal of
the game for RPI. Union pulled Gallant, and got some decent chances
before RPI broke it out and Majic hit the empty net with 2 seconds
left.

Overall, it was a very good effort by Union, and a poor showing by
RPI. The fieldhouse had a crowd of over 4000, but it was a very quiet
4000. The couple hundred Union fans who made the trip up were louder
for the most part than the RPI crowd. Other than the RPI goals, there
was not a whole lot of noise.

Union now stands at 1-7-1 in the ECAC, 5-7-2 overall. RPI is 5-3-1 in
the league and 11-5-1 overall. Union will play just one game next
weekend, at home against Yale on Friday night.
