Game one: Hockey, hockey, hockey, hockey weekend. Bright Hockey Center.

Amid the sea of yawning tan trench coats, the derby game between Harvard
and Yale unfolded as a very even affair, despite what the score
suggests. These days the Bulldogs and the Crimson play the same
in-your-face, shut-it-down style of hockey. I feel they also have a
similar amount of talent. If you are looking for "total-hockey", these
two teams seem to ge going for just that.

Harvard opening the scoring in the first period on goal by Ted Drury
(Chris Baird, Sean McCann). Drury was behind the net, and when he sent
a centering pass out front, it deflected off a defensive player, and
into the net. You could feel this goal coming, as Harvard was playing
with alot of confidence from their Beanpot victory.

The end of the first period and the first half of the second saw what
seemed to be an endless series of penalties on the Elis. The reason
for them: third line center Steve Martins. To his credit, he was
creating many scoring chances for himself and his linemates. Un-
fortunately Martins dives alot. Fortunately the refs. caught onto his
act pretty quickly.

The second goal was a power play goal by Steve Flomenhoft (Martins,
Tom Holmes) put in off a rebound in the left slot. Alittle while later
in the second period, another power play goal by Matt Mallgrave (Baird,
Drury) was a nice three-way passing play. The fourth goal, also a
power play goal, was scored by Baird (Brian Farrell, Mallgrave) and
came off a nice deflection on a low shot from the left point. Yale
got its only goal of the game on a power play when Jack Duffy (Mark
Kaufmann, Peter Allen) tipped a shot from close range.

The third period was scoreless. I liked the play of Kaufmann, James
Lavish and Martin Leroux for Yale. That line looked like it could get
real hot. Dan Brierley on defense played a solid game, and made a
few long break out passes. For Harvard I loved the play of Martins
(when he didn't dive). He is instant offense, something the team
needs. His line (Ben Coughlin, Martins, Kirk Nielsen) often created
the most interesting plays. Michel Breistroff played a strong game on
defense, standing up on his blue line well. Drury created space for
his teammates with some of his lovely passes. Overall it was a good
tense match.
