The Penn State Icers upped their record to 25-0-0 last night with a 7-2
victory over former ICHL foe Erie College. The game was actually much closer
than the final score, as the Icekats were backed by outstanding goaltender
Mike Chase, who, IMHO, had the most class of any of his teammates. That is
to say, Erie plays a very physical, chippy style of hockey, and just a few
minutes into the first period, one of the Icekats received a 5-minute major and
a game disqualification for checking-from-behind, as he sent Icer Ben Bouma
into the boards (fortunately, Bouma was OK). Unfortunately, the Icekats would
not only kill off this power play, but also score a shorthanded goal to take an
early 1-0 lead. Penn State scored late in the first, and it was all tied at one
as the teams headed to the locker room. Or should I say, most of them. Eire
defenseman Brandon Burgasser was a little slow in leaving the ice, skating
around his own net a few times. One fan yelled for him to "GET OFF THE ICE!!",
to which Mr. Burgasser responded by making an obscene gesture with his stick.
This got a reaction from the crowd, and Burgasser responded with a "c'mon, I'll
take you all on" gesture. Unfortunately, he would not have the chance to do
so, as he never returned from the locker room for the rest of the game (we're
still not sure, but we think his coach might have benched him for his actions).

Anyway, back to the game. Penn State scored twice in the second, including
Mark Cervellero's game-winner late in the period, and the Icers led 3-1 after
two. Erie would make something of a comeback, scoring early in the third to
cut the lead to one, but the Icers would score four unanswered goals, including
two on the power play, for the 7-2 final. The Icekats drop to 18-6-0, while
Penn State is now only one victory shy of the club record for wins in a season.
They'll have the chance to tie it this afternoon as the Icers face the Towson
State Tigers.
