"U loses to Alumni in Hockey" (from the Mpls Star Tribune, John Gilbert) kkkkk

The Alumni skated to a 5-4 hockey victory over most of the Gophers regulars
Sunday night at Mariucci Arena. Dean Williamson scored on perfect set-ups from
Steve Ulseth and Jay Cates to pace the Alumni, which also got goals from
Ulseth, Jeff Teal, and Jon Anderson against goalie Tom Newman.

Nick Gerebi scored twice and Lance Werness and Joe Dziedzic once each for the
 Gophers against goaltender Paul Joswiak.

Afterward, some of the Alumni players jokingly questioned the validity of the
Gophers' No. 1 national ranking. "What's the name of that radio station out in
Maine?" asked Ulseth, who was a star last night, just as he was back in 1981.
He meant WMEB, which conducts one poll ranking Minnesota No. 1. "Somebody
 better give them a call."

"Yeah," said Williamson. "This must make US No. 1." (end of article)

The game was pretty entertaining and also featured a game of older Alumni,
including Gopher coaches Doug Woog, Bill Butters and goalie coach Paul Ostby
(who was playing as a defenseman). The older Alums scrimmaged before the main
event at 7:00 PM. The Gophers looked pretty laid-back in their game and Tom
Newman laughed after each goal scored on him. (I was behind the goal taking
some photos for my collection.) Sportswriter John Gilbert was there also
taking pictures and notes for his report and laughingly taunted Newmanseveral
times after the Alumni scored. It looked like it was great fun for both teams.
John Brill was one of the two linesman for the game. The Gophers leave today
 for L.A. and the Freeze-out.
