Comment: Wow! Carol, is this for real? I mean, AFTER you subtract
the COSTS of the Gopher hockey program, is there still $1 million
left? I am definitely impressed! Do you guys have some kind of
great TV contract, or what? I realize your attendance is pretty good,
but even if it's over 100,000 a year, given the costs of a program
I'm amazed by this profit figure. After all, scholarships, coaches'
and other staff members' salaries and benefits, associated front office
costs, equipment, supplies and travel have to consume a lot of the
revenue. I realize that by virtue of having its own building U. Minn
is much better off than schools like Northern Michigan, which has to
rent its ice sheet--and also thereby forgoes any share of parking and
concessions revenue. (Of course, some university financial types might
argue that in such cases the amortization of the building's construction
costs--not to mention its annual operating costs--should be included
in the program's "balance sheet." ;-) .)
