I'm sure the hockey mavens will correct me if I'm wrong but I thought I read
somewhere that the New York Rangers originally came from somewhere in
Minnesota.  Thus the name.

Similar to the L.A. Lakers that were once the Minneapolis Lakers.  (Minneapolis
claims to be the city of lakes.)
