David has asked what the reaction has been to my advice in math classes when I
tell my student-athletes that they have an excellent opportunity to get their
education even though they may have pro dreams. I have to say that I have
never had a negative experience with any of them. As instructors or
professors, we are asked to evaluate these student-athletes twice each semester
and the results go to the advisors. I believe it is done for only freshmen,
although I can't be sure of this. In particular, I have worked with two hockey
players, both Canadian, one a star now, and they were especially kind as well as
school-oriented. Also an interesting note, when Joby Wright was our varsity
men's basketball coach, I had two of his players in class, and I received a
letter from him stating that if any of his players missed a class to contact
him personally immediately. That shows some caring about education. Also the
players themselves have responded positively to me and my attempts to help them
learn.
