Obviously, I agree with Bri. This "conservative" attitude towards garnering national
t.v. exposure isn't simply a fear of change (for example, I think it's great that the
NHL finally woke up and changed its playoff system, and I also would be in favor of
a 16 team NCAA draw), but a challenge to the concept of growth for growth's sake.
Isn't one of the things that attracts you to college hockey that it is fairly free of the
myriad diseases of Professional and Major College athletics? Do we really want
Jerry Tarkanians and Dick Vitales in our midst, or the flavor-of-the-month
Hollywood babelette parading around the building at the title game? As eloquent as
Brian Morris' argument is for the other side - the forces of evil, of course :^) - I can't
agree that the "us" vs. "them" attitude is completely irrational. The "them" isn't the
other sports or their fans, after all; the "them" is the "seek-and-exploit" marketing
mentality which pervades our culture and turns any Good into "goods". The
commercial value of a college sport is not a benign influence, it is a sometimes
necessary evil - and is this case, there is no necessaity. Do you want to see your team
play? Do what I do... DRIVE!
