The University of Maine completed a sweep of the UMass-Lowell Chiefs
tonight with a 4-2 decision at the Alfond Arena. Sophomore Mike
Latendresse picked up where he left off last night, notching is 4th
goal of the weekend, and 14th of the season with 20 seconds left in the
first period. It was a shorthanded goal, with the assist going to
Chris Imes. In the second UMaine took a 2-0 lead when Jim Montgomery
ripped a gorgeous wrister past UML Goalie Dwayne Roloson 3:12 into
the period (assisted by Cal Ingraham). Lowell got on the board when
Mike Murray scored at 14:05 unassisted. UMaine clinched the win
when Paul Kariya and Jim Montgomery scored at 3:01 and 3:24 of the third
period. Assists went to: (Montgomery on Kariya's, and Kariya and
Ingraham on Montgomery's). Lowell tried to make a comeback when Shane
Henry notched a power play goal at 10:14. But that was all the offense
either team could muster. There was a major controversy at 13:53 of
third period when Maine was called for too many men on the ice. This
was an INCREDIBLY close call, which should not have been called. After
a VERY long discussion between Coach Shawn Walsh and the two officials,
Justin Tomberlin took a seat in the box. Play resumed...however, the

clock did not. For the next 15 seconds time stood still at Alfond Arena.
After several minutes of discussions, it was decided that the 15 seconds
which never ticked off the clock never happened(try telling that to Garth
Snow who faced three point blank shots while the clock was not moving).

In that 23 second span when the Kariya-Montgomery-Ingraham line scored,
Paul Kariya set 2 UMaine records. On the first goal Paul set a record
by scoring at least one point in 24 consecutive games. It was then
announced that he had also set a record for most points by a Black Bear
rookie, with 66. It was only fitting that he accomplished that on this
     night...more on that later.
