(BOX SCORE FOLLOWS COMMENTARY...)

IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN FRIDAY THE 13TH TONIGHT AT YOST...

The fans at Yost were treated to one interesting game tonight.
It was a fantastic game, with Michigan clearly dominating
throughout the night. Great performances were put in by
freshmen John Arnold and Kevin Hilton. Hilton had two goals
and two assists and played strong for the entire 60 minutes and
24 seconds (more on that later...). Arnold was the "checker"
of the game, providing the undisputed best and hardest hits of
the game.

I don't know if Kent was at its best last weekend or Lake Superior
was not, but the Kent State team I saw tonight was one that clearly
was out of its league against the clicking Michigan Wolverines.
Had the Wolverines played in the form that it has been, it would
have been a close game. Saturday night should provide us with a
more complete picture of both teams.

Now, onto the wierder side of the game. While the hockey game was
great, the folks in the scorer's booth were not paying attention
to the game. Especially the one with the finger on the game clock.
Once, he forgot to start the clock for about 10 seconds. Later, he
didn't stop the clock until 5 or so seconds after play had stopped.
Then the fun began.

Six minutes and 17 seconds into the third period, Kent State's Fair
was whistled for a crosscheck by referee Edwards. By mistake, I'm
sure, the officials in the scorer's booth put the 2:00 on the GAME
clock, overwriting the 13:43 that was there. For some reason,
when they moved the 2:00 over to it's proper place, they apparently
did not know what time to put back onto the clock. So, they put
14:07 (the time of the last goal) on the clock. Translating, they
were off by 24 seconds. Yes, tonight's game was 60 minutes, 24
seconds long.

This really wouldn't be a big deal, but Kent State's Sylvester
scored with 19:53 on the game clock. Now, let's think about this.
Considering the mistake made by our friends in the scorer booth, this
means the goal was actually scored at 20:17 of the third. To be honest,
this game was not even close, and Sylvester was by far the star of
the night for the Golden Flash. So, personally, I don't mind letting
him have the hat trick.

But what gets me is that these people in the scorer's booth _should_
be paying attention to what is going on. These mistakes should not
happen...but I'm not going to get further into this now.
