According to the Lansing (MI) State Journal at the Great Western Freeze-Out
on Thursday night "Boston College defeated No. 1-ranked Minnesota, 3-2, in
the tourney opener." Sorry, CW. Of course, citing that ranking indicates
severe instongnorance -- defined as ignorance of the Instone ratings. KES
had Boston College ranked 4th and Minnesota ranked 6th. So a one-goal
differential is about to be expected in a good game between the two, but the
game going in the direction of Keith's rankings is probably just
happenstance.

In the second game the MSU Spartans came from behind 3-2 in the third to
defeat the U of Toronto Varsity Blues -- I like that moniker -- 4-3. MSU
outshot Toronto 52-16, making another goalie look hot. In the second period
Toronto had two shots on goal and two goals scored. Muzatti, MSU's goalie,
must have been at the concession stand. So the Spartans play BC Friday
night. In November the teams split a series in East Lansing, Spartans
winning the first game 4-2 and BC winning the second 5-4 on a late
power-play goal.

The Lansing paper didn't give box scores on either game, but don't bother to
run to your local newsstand for the la-la land paper to get the details.
Steve Klein of the State Journal says the LA Times had the Freeze-Out promo
story on page 19 of Thursday's sports section. Steve had another tidbit
that the money watchers probably already knew. The Great Western Freeze-Out
is at the Great Western Forum, which used to be called the Fabulous Forum
until the Great Western Bank started paying Jerry Buss $1Meg per year to
have its name on the front of the building. It might have been cheaper to
change the name to the Fabulous Bank. No wonder we taxpayers are set up to
bail out all those financial institutions.
