NC$$ do's and don'ts, especially A. Mintz "far above Cayuga's waters." I've
been too swamped with work lately to respond as I'd like, but never fear -
I'm working on a follow-up to come .... It seems that Dave O'Connor, UNH's
"compliance coordinator" has beaten me to the punch and has issued a list
of approved "fan/booster conduct" that's even more "NO" anal than Keith's
succinct summary :-) Highlights in a week or so ....

1) For those of you who may have forgotten, Hockey East shifts to an
unbalanced schedule next year by dividing the league into two divisions
for SCHEDULING PURPOSES ONLY. Teams will play the other three teams
in its division 4 times (3 x 4 = 12 games) plus the four teams outside
its division 3 times (4 x 3 = 12 games) for 24 total HE league games
complimented by up to 10 non-league contests. Grouped with UNH in
one division is Providence, UMass-Lowell and Boston College; Maine
Boston University, Merrimack and Northeastern comprise the other.
2) Opening on the road with tough non-league games at Gutterson Field House,
Appleton and Cheel Arenas, it's not likely that the 'Cats will repeat
last year's surprising 8-0-0 start, especially since we're playing the
Golden Knights on Halloween !!
3) The league schedule-makers have intensified the trend of recent years
towards scheduling more and more games on Friday/Saturday nights -
only one game (apart from the Holiday Tournament) is scheduled for
mid-week play. A new wrinkle (at least for UNH) is the preponderance
of home-and-home weekend series that dominate the schedule, partially
a natural result of the increase in league games to 24 (and the even
number of games against certain opponents that entails) and what would
appear to be a conscious decision by the league brass. Since most of
the league teams are clustered fairly close together, it's just as easy
to (for example) play BU at home on Friday, then bus to Matthews Arena
at Northeastern (instead of Walter Brown Arena at BU) on Saturday. My
initial reaction is "Why tempt the (usually unnecessary) "chippiness"
that always seems to accompany back-to-back meetings like this. Wouldn't
it be just as easy to rotate teams on consecutive nights to avoid the
possibility of ugly confrontations ??" Time will tell whether I'm
over-reacting or not .....
4) The 'Cats don't meet traditional rival BU until 22 January, and finish
the season series just two weeks later at Walter Brown Arena. This
just compounds the problem of over-familiarity with opponents that I
touched on above ....
5) UNH has continued its admirable habit of scheduling non-conference games
against long-time ECAC foes (and Snively fan favorites) RPI, SLU and
Clarkson. I hope these rivalries can continue, though now that SLU
and Clarkson have entered into an interlocking scheduling agreement
with Maine and Providence, it's only going to get harder to schedule
them (at least until the ECAC loosens up a bit and permits its members
to play the full complement of 34 games permitted by the NC$$). If
UMass-Amherst (and perhaps UConn) do one day join Hockey East, I'm
afraid that games against the Saints and Knights will be only a dim
memory :-(
