Beth has done an excellent job of explaining the "what to do in Albany"
routine. Being that I go to Union, I also would like to put my $0.02 in.
As far as the parking goes, if you're willing to spend $5, the KNick has
its own parking garage, and it is event parking. That means $5 for the whole
time, day, evening, etc. This garage has access ramps to the Knick and the
exit from the garage is fairly straightforward out to I-787. The outdoor lots
are cheaper and the Empire State Plaza lots are a little cheaper too, but both
of those options require some walking, even over four-lane expressways =-).
So, the garages around the Knick are the best bet since the parking is event.
Another hint, Albany can be as crazy as Boston when driving downtown. What may
look close to eye, might be far to the steering wheel. Remember, the Knick
arena is at 51 South Pearl Street. this could make it easier when you are
looking for parking since most of the major garages that are close are on or
just off Pearl. Every time I have gone to the Knick for something, I have
driven to one of the garages, parked, went, got out of the garage, and back
onto the highway without major difficulty. I guess it would behoove one to
get to the area early, so that "unexpected" problems have time to be dealt
with.
As far as entertainment goes, Beth has outlined things well.
Schenectady is west of Albany and has its fair share of attractions. Stop
by a tourist office for brochures that explain the different things to see.
If Friday is a nice day, there are some great things to do in the Capital
District. I was hoping to go to the games due to my close proximity, but
I have track meets on both days that the Championships are being held. =-(
But, at least one of the meets is at home against..... RPI. ;-). Hope all
of you that are coming will enjoy the games and the area. If anyone has
any questions, please feel free to mail me a message or to call me when they
arrive in the area. My number is (518) 393-7206. I would be happy to help
in any way that I can. Seeya. Keith.
