I see no connection between grandfathering (i.e. allowing D1 scholarships by those who currently do) and elitism. The problem is that grandfathering SHUTS THE DOOR and does not allow other schools to voluntarily go in the future where they can voluntarily go now -- offer a D1 sport complete with the means to compete at that level (i.e. scholarships). There are many ways for college hockey to grow but adding or recruiting or proselytizing D3 schools has now been eliminated along with the ability of D3 schools to bridge the gap to D1 status. The concept that D3 sports are pure and should not be corrupted by scholarships is elitism.

Somewhere down the line lets hope some maverick D3 school tries to offer D1 hockey and forces the NCAA to remove any barrier they have constructed. My guess would be women's hockey would make the easiest attack.
