BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Salem State goaltender Mike Gregorio was dazzling with 43
saves and Craig Seabury scored two goals, leading the visiting Vikings to a 6-4
victory over Bowdoin in ECAC East hockey action Tuesday evening. The Polar
Bears, who lost an opportunity to overtake Salem State in the standings, fell
to 13-7 overall (12-6 in ECAC East). Salem State improved to 15-7 overall,
11-3 in the league.

After Charlie Gaffney gave Bowdoin a lead early in the game on a nice pass from
his twin brother, Joe, four simultaneous roughing penalties opened up the ice
for a three-on-three situation. Salem started the roughing behind the Bowdoin
net, and despite Joe Gaffney's attempts to get away from Jarred Morey,
the officials decided to remove all four individuals involved. (I think
Salem should have gotten an extra two, but then again I am a bit biased :-))

The Vikings are one of the few teams in ECAC East that would have an advantage
in a 3-on-3 situation against Bowdoin, and they converted when Dan Bates
scored on a fine play. Craig Seabury gave Salem a lead they would never
relinquish, with a man-advantage at 16:28 of the 1st period.

So, despite a 47-35 shot advantage, and numerous chances, the Polar Bears did
not get an important victory that could keep Bowdoin from getting home-ice
in the first round of the playoffs. Salem's Mike Gregorio overcame a shaky
start, and played a great game with 43 saves.

Finally, to continue whining, the officating of this game was, to be kind,
inconsistent. Both Salem State and Bowdoin were able to get away with some
real cheap stuff, while the officials were then content to make calls
on some real borderline infractions. Ah, the sour grapes following the loss,
but IMHO when three guys are on the ice, the officials should not miss as
much as they did tonight.
