(28Feb99) Sunday afternoon at UT's Varsity Arena, the host University of
Toronto Varsity Blues defeated the Laurier Golden Hawks 1-0 to win the 3rd
place match of the Canadian Nationals. The all-Ontario derby had its rough
and tumble moments. In the end, you could tell by Toronto's extra zip, that
they wanted it more.

There was no scoring in the opening period. UT was looking better playing
shorthanded.

In the middle stanza, the Blues got the only goal of the game on a power play.
Jen Rawson (Rhonda Mitchell) picked up a rebound and roofed it. Laurier
couldn't seem to find their skating legs.

In the third, Laurier took too many penalties, while UT went close several
times. The lengthy stick measurement sketch by the zebras might have been the
highlight!

Laurier is a team who expected to be playing in the final. For whatever
reason, they never got it going this weekend. Charmaine Boteju held her
ground in goal and stoned several UT shooters. Kimberly Shillington played
some tight defense and saved the day a few times. The line of Caroline Hall,
Heather Allan and Ashley Colter is extremely good together. The long ball
play they hit to Hall was Laurier's top weapon. Hall went close a couple of
times. Overall, I suspect Laurier can play much better.

The trivializing of sport with loud pop music at every stoppage of play was
unfortunately in fashion at the University of Toronto.
