RPI goalie Joel Laing was hot enough to make up for
an inconsistent defense as RPI defeats UVM 5-2 on Friday night.
Together with St. Lawrence's victory over Princeton, RPI
moves into sole possesion of 3rd place in the ECAC standings.

The scoring opened at 9:29 of the 1st period when
Danny Riva broke into the UVM zone 1 on 2. Riva dropped the puck
back to Jared Reigstad who was trailing the play. Reigstad blasted
the puck from the high slot past Andrew Allen to put RPI up 1-0.
Two and a half minutes later at 11:57 Danny Riva found Matt Murley standing
all by himself in the low slot in front of UVM netminder Allen.
Murley was so alone he had time to put 3 or 4 moves on the goalie and slide it
between Allen and the left post to put the Engineers up 2-0.
At 17:42, Alain St. Hillaire won a faceoff in center ice and poked
the puck into the Catamount zone. Pete Gardiner raced in as UVM netminder
Andrew Allen raced out and Gardiner got his stick on the puck just
inside the blue line just as Allen poked it away from Gardiner's stick.
The puck richocheted toward the side boards where Matt Murley picked it up,
took two steps around UVM defensemen and flipped the puck into a still empty
Vermont net making the score 3-0 at the end of one.

Vermont replaced goalie Andrew Allen with Marty Phillips to start the
2nd period. Just a minute and a half into the period, RPI goalie,
Joel Laing lost his stick when he was bumped just outside the crease.
The puck was picked up behind the net by Phillipe Choiniere who found
Graham Mink in the slot. Mink beat the stickless Laing over the shoulder
to put the Cats on the board 3-1. UVM had changed their gameplan between the
first and second period and the RPI defense never adjusted properly
as the Cats played a tighter checking game in the second and kept the
RPI defense off balance all period. While the Cats couldn't put
another one in the net in the second period, they kept peppering Joel
Laing with shots throughout the period putting 27 shots on Laing while
giving up only 7 shots on Phillips. Nevertheless, at 18:41, Mark Murphy
intercepted
a Vermont clearing pass and found Steve Caley all alone to Marty
Phillips left. Caley put one past Phillips getting RPI its 3 goal
lead back as the second period ended.

The third period was back and forth hockey with RPI trying to play
defensively and hold their lead. UVM pulled within 2 at 6:43
with their second 4 on 4 goal scored by Don Richardson (assists to
Jean-Francoise Caudron and Andreas Moborg). RPI countered at 8:43
with a goal by Steve Caley (assists by Brad tapper and Mark Murphy).

RPI moves into 3rd place by virtue of their victory and Princeton's
loss. In addition, Princeton faces Clarkson tomorrow night while
RPI faces Dartmouth in the annual Big Red Freakout.
