what's up with last year's finalists?

Michigan and Boston College --
 
Both of these teams seemed to roar out of the gate this year, holding onto
top 5 (or so) rankings for quite a while. Of late it seems they've really
been slipping rapidly from the top spots, with losses and ties to mediocre
teams.
 
Now I'm certainly not counting these teams out, especially not the
Wolverines. But still, what gives?
