All comments taken from articles in the Albany Times-Union
and the WRPI broadcast. I was not at the game.
As a matter of fact, I was in my front yard listening to
the game through my front porch speakers while putting
up Christmas lights in the dark on a large bush using
my fly rod and a step ladder
(but that's a whole different story!!!).

RPI snuck out of Hamilton with 2 ECAC points on Friday
after stealing one from league leading Colgate. The victory
was especially sweet for RPI head coach Dan Fridgen, who,
not only, is a Colgate alumnus but, who still owns several
Colgate scoring records. This was Fridgen's first win at Starr
rink since taking over the head job at RPI 5 years ago.

From the broadcast, it seemed as if the balance of play was
carried by Colgate through the 1st 2 periods with RPI up
2-1 due to some opportunistic plays and some phenomonal(sp?)
goaltending from Joel Laing. RPI finally seemed to come back
and dominate the play for the first part of the 3rd period
when they took a 3-1 lead. But halfway through the 3rd, two
stupid, unnecessary penalties as well as the now traditional
3rd period disintergration of the RPI defense, allowed Colgate
to score 2 goals in under a minute to tie the score. Somehow,
RPI managed to hold off an attacking Colgate squad for the remainder
of the third to end regulation in a tie.

In overtime, Pete Gardiner stripped the puck fromColgate defenseman
at the blue line and he, Mark Murphy and Alain St. Hillaire broke into
the Colgate zone 3 on 1 with St. Hillaire scoring the winning goal.

This was RPI's 4th OT game of the season, and their 3rd OT win.

Meanwhile, in Ithaca, Cornell freed itself of the Union albatross
by beating the Skating Dutchmen 5-2 for the first time since Feb. 1996.
The two teams racked up an ECAC record of 217 penalty minutes including
185 minutes assessed during a brawl at 18:11 of the 3rd period.
During that brawl, Union goaltender Leeor Shtrom left the crease
and mixed it up with Cornell goalie Ian Burt resulting in a 3 game
suspension for Shtrom and 1 game for Burt.

That leaves the Engineers in a position to play in Ithaca tonight
against a Cornell backup goaltender and with forward Danny Riva returning
to action after serving a one game suspension due to a game dq against
Harvard Tuesday night. Meanwhile, Shtrom will be forced to sit out
Saturday's game against Colgate as well as both games in the RPI
Invitational later in the month.
