Slightly less unpalatable might be to determine advancement by a
shootout, so that it's a tie according to everyone, but apparently the
NCAA forbids that.  Bill Fenwick pointed out at the time that it would
have been even more interesting (in the sense of the Chinese curse) if
Hockey East had still been using shootouts in its conference
standings.
