i seem to remember michigan chasing them all season long but never
quite catching up.  those darn black bears just wouldn't lose...

1) Has there ever been a team which finished the regular season

regionals) in first place and gone on to win the national championship?
 
 
2) What was the lowest ranking (again, pre-NCAA regionals) of a team to
