The Munn really jumped - large SRO crowd. The game got a little chippy as
it became one-sided. Hard checking but the officiating prevent fighting.
MSU's Jon Gaskins was hurt in the middle of the game (in the knee) and
will probably be out at least until the playoffs. Berens last goal off
his winning the faceoff really showed his quickness.

Berens Notches Third Hat Trick As Spartans Top Wolverines, 5-1

                         Friday, February 20, 1998
                            by Daniel Rees Mills

East Lansing, MI -- Michigan State senior Sean Berens did to Michigan
Friday night what he had done to two previous opponents this year: he
netted a hat trick to propel the Spartans to victory. And this time, he
helped the Spartans' Ron Mason become the first collegiate coach ever to
garner 800 career victories.

With Berens' help, the second-ranked Spartans defeated the fifth-ranked
Wolverines, 5-1, before a crowd of 6,689 extremely enthusiastic Michigan
State fans at Munn Arena.

"That really helps us," Berens said of the fans' support. "We play off
the
crowd. The game's for the fans."

Those fans poured onto the ice following the game to show their
appreciation and support for Mason and the Spartans, and for his part,
Mason was humbled by the post-game ceremony. "I'm more interested in
playing for first place than I am [in] 800 wins," he said, "But the
showing
of affection after the game -- that's something I've never had happen to
me.

"To see something like that...touches you."

Meanwhile, Michigan head coach Red Berenson was disappointed with his
team's performance on the ice. "We didn't play well enough defensively
and
we didn't play well enough offensively," he said.

Berenson benched goaltender Marty Turco for the game for disciplinary
reasons, giving backup netminder Gregg Malicke a starring role in the
game.
But Berenson didn't think goaltender switch affected the outcome.

"I thought Malicke was fine," he said. "He was not a factor in the game."

The Wolverines started off strong, controlling play for most of the first
three minutes. But at the 3:30 mark, Michigan State got a boost on a goal
by junior Bryan Adams, playing his first game after returning from a
shoulder injury.

Adams got his seventh of the season by finishing a play set up by
linemates
Rustyn Dolyny and Mike York. Dolyny dropped the puck to York as the three
entered the zone, and York quickly fed the puck to Adams. Adams' initial
shot was saved by Malicke, but Adams smartly flipped the puck into the
top
shelf on his second attempt.

Berens got his first goal of the contest at the 11:07 mark, putting
Michigan State up 2-0 on a two-on-one with Spartan senior Kevin O'Keefe.
O'Keefe took the puck to the left side of the ice past Wolverine Sean
Peach
and fired a shot which was turned away with a high rebound by Malicke.
Berens then batted the puck out of the air and into the net.

Michigan State senior goaltender Chad Alban did his part to keep the
Spartans' two-goal lead intact at the 16:16 mark. Michigan leading scorer
Bill Muckalt came into the zone on a breakaway and deked to Alban's
right,
but lost the puck to a precise poke-check by the goaltender.

The Spartans scored once more in the first period, at the 19:38 mark when
Berens got his second of the night, putting the puck above Malicke from
the
slot after receiving a pass from O'Keefe. Captain Tyler Harlton also
assisted on the goal.

Michigan came out ready for the second period, outshooting Michigan State
11-5 in the middle stanza. The Wolverines got on the board just 2:54 into
the period, after Spartan defenseman Brad Hodgins was sent off for
roughing.

It was captain Matt Herr who tallied for Michigan, as he skated out alone
from the corner and cleanly beat Alban above his right shoulder. Mark
Kosick and Josh Langfeld assisted on Herr's effort.

But the Spartans got that goal back at the 8:06 mark, on a power play
that
resulted from Michigan having too many men on the ice. Dolyny lit the
lamp
for Michigan State when he knocked in the rebound off defenseman Chris
Bogas' point shot. Berens notched an assist by feeding the puck to Bogas.

Berens completed his hat trick and finished the game's scoring at the
6:25
mark of the third period. Berens won a faceoff, went around the Wolverine
center, and beat Malicke through the five-hole.

Berens, nonetheless, was baffled by the number of goals he has been
scoring
lately. "I don't know what it is right now," he said. "The pucks are
going
in for me this year."

The win brings the Spartans (23-4-5, 17-4-4 CCHA) within one point of the
CCHA-leading Wolverines (24-7-1, 19-5-1 CCHA) in the conference
standings.
Michigan State and Michigan face off once again Saturday night at Joe
Louis
Arena in Detroit.
