While there has been a lot of whining by UNH fans, myself included, about
the unfair boost Chris Drury seems to be getting in the Hobey Baker
campaign, I have really not seen a case made as to why, at this point,
Jason Krog deserves the honor.

First, the simple numbers - he is leading the nation in scoring, and has
been most of the season. Secondly, he is the only player in the nation who
is averaging over 2 points per game, and has been all season (note: UNH has
the top four points per game scorers in the nation). Third, Krog leads the
nation in game winning goals with 6. Now, this can surely can be a
misleading statistic since a player can be credited with the game winner by
scoring the first in a 11-0 blowout. While he has had a couple like that,
he has also had three games, where he has scored in the third period to
WIN the game. Krog also is part of one of the nation's leading penalty
kill tandems, as UNH has killed over 90% of man down situations this year.
In addition, he has three shorthanded goals this year and is paired with
Derek Bekar, who leads the nation, I believe, with five.
Besides penalty kill, he is on the power play, altho only 4 of his 27 goals
are with a man up.

My observation is that last year, despite scoring 67 points, Krog coasted a
little at times. Not so this year. Whether it was motivation from his
coach, or his inner drive, he has played hard this year in every game. On
top of that, his vision on the ice is incredible. How he makes some of
the plays he does is unfathomable. It can be a cliche but, he does make
better those who play with him.

Finally, Jason Krog is a two-time Hockey East All-Academic and is well on
his way to a third. He is a humble guy both on and off the ice, excels in
the classroom and clearly has the burning desire to improve as a player and
win for his team. When you roll the whole package together, he is my
choice for the Hobey.
