No box score for Yale/LSSU. Final LSSU 5 - Yale 0.
I listened to the first period and a half on the
radio and the saw the second half of the game in
person.
With Yale leading (or tied for the lead) in the ECAC
and LSSU not showing much in the CCHA, I wasn't sure what
to expect. What I saw, however, was unexpected. Lake State
dominated the entire game from start to finish. They played
a CCHA/ western style of hockey using their big forwards
deep in the corners and their big defensemen to grab the pucks
along the boards. Yale apparently wanted to use speed and finesse
to set the pace of the game. LSSU prevailed. They set the pace of
the game and Yale did not have the size to compete in this contest.
Perhaps Yale wasn't ready for this type of game coming off a 3 week
break for finals, but LSSU has been out of action for 2 weeks also.
Maybe Yale had a bad night. Maybe LSSU had a good night. Maybe both.

How's that for definitive reporting???? ;-)
By the way, LSSU freshman goalie Jayme Platt got the shutout for
LSSU in his 2nd collegiate hockey game.

RPI dominated this game but it was far from pretty hockey. The student
pep band was absent and a local merchant loaned an organ to be played
by one of the pep band members who lives locally. The poor guy obviously
needed more practice on the Canadian national anthem which he absolutely
slaughtered. Fortunately, he did much better on the US anthem. With the
entire US Military Academy hockey team watching him, perhaps he felt a
little more pressure to get that one right.
The sound of the ever present Rensselaer fight song being played on the
hurdy-gurdy lent a circus-like atmosphere to the game which seemed to carry
over into the play.

Army does not have a strong offensive team. Their strength is their
extremely well disciplined defense that just keeps hammering away.
Sometimes their defense causes their opponents to make mistakes that
leads to Army goals. Sometimes the defense can't create those chances
and Army loses. Tonight, that well disciplined defense wasn't there.
Army just couldn't get their act together. Perhaps it was the 3 week
break they came off of (but RPI has been off for 3 weeks also).
RPI clearly outplayed them in every aspect. Yet RPI did not look
good either. They kept trying to make one pass too many or set
up the "perfect" goal. Also, their defensemen couldn't be bothered carrying
the puck out of their own end. Instead, they just threw the puck into center
ice and let the forwards fight it out. It worked against Army. That
type of play will get them killed tomorrow night against LSSU.
Perhaps they were "playing down" to their competition. Or perhaps
they were sloppy coming in from a 3 week break. Presumably Fridgen
will let them know in the locker room that they will not win many hockey
games if they play the way they did tonight.

Tomorrow will tell.
