As a native Bostonian every bit as jaded by the travails of commuting as
you are, I have to disagree.  Parking in Boston is torture, particularly
with all the construction.  Where in the name of James Michael Curley
can you park for $5?  Boston has the reputation of having the world's
worst drivers, which may leave out-of-towners in much distress
(actually, I think we have the worst pedestrians).

They aren't useless, in fact they are quite convenient.  Instead of
proceeding all the way to South Station, get off at Back Bay Station.
From there transfer to the aforementioned Orange Line (you need to buy
an $0.85 token) to North Station.  I take the Needham line of the
commuter rail into downtown all the time, and this works great.
