UVM handled this tricky issue with a great amount of dignity and humility
(IMHO) in 1996, when they finished the regular season in first place but
did not win the tournament.  Their banner reads "1995-96  ECAC First
Place."  This is completely accurate and precise, so that it avoids the
problem of defining "champion."   Considering how badly UVM wanted to win
their first ECAC championship that year, I was impressed that they did not
use the word champion on their banner.
 
We all know how Cornell fans define the ECAC championship....
