While I don't pretend to be a brilliant hockey analyst, it doesn't take a genius to realize that the Gophers offensive production has been pretty anemic. Saturday's three goals was a recent high water mark. Not too many games are won with one or two goals. Also, while perhaps DeBus hasn't been playing as well as he can it is hard to blame the losses on him with both anemic production and a young defense. Also, Jason Godbout is now out in addition to Clymer. Saturday's game really points out how the young defense has been hurting them. After it appeared that the Gophers had the game against CC in hand with a 3-2 lead late in the game, CC's Toby Peterson (Bloomington, MN) cleanly picked the puck from a Gopher behind the Gopher net and then centered it to Peters who was standing all alone in front of the Gophers net. It is hard to fault DeBus on that. In the overtime, Voorhees blew by a Gopher frosh defenseman to sail in uncontested on DeBus. Steve stopped the first shot but Voorhees put in his own rebound. Again, it is hard to fault a goalie who stops an uncontested shot but gets no help on the rebound. Maybe he could be criticized on the rebound but frankly I thought he did well to stop the shot. Voorhees hustled and got the rebound (on what to some extent was a lucky bounce) and put it in. Not much for DeBus to do. He is being hurt by Crowley and Clymer's absence, by the team's youth and by the failure of the Gophers to put the puck in the net. It could be a very long season here in the Twins.
