Summary:

Colgate got 5 goals from Marcel Richard, 3 on the power play, one
shorthanded, and one even strength, to lead the Red Raiders past
Union, 8-3.

Things went wrong for Union right from the start. A delayed penalty
call on Chris Albert from the opening faceoff gave Colgate a power
play at 0:15. Colgate couldn't score on this one, but with Matt
Kelley in the box at 4:02, Richard got his first goal of the night on
a shot from the blue line. Union tied it on Rick Burchill's goal at
10:13. But with Dalton Menhall off for Union, Fahey gave Colgate the
lead for good, on a nicely set up power play goal at 14:18. Union did
get a power play at the end of the period, but they were missing
passes, and failed to get off a shot as time ran out in the period,
instead passing the puck around waiting for a perfect shot.

The Ducthmen had 1:40 of a 5-on-3 advantage early in the second
period, but could not score. Jayson Flowers found himself alone with
the puck in front of goalie Ken Baker, who was down on the ice, but
could not lift the puck above Baker's glove. Soon after, Dalton
Menhall missed a breakaway chance, hitting the crossbar. Both teams
played some very good hockey in the middle of the period. There was a
stretch of 5 or 6 minutes without a whistle. Colgate scored on a
4-on-3 power play at 12:32, Richard's second goal. Richard's 3rd goal
came right after Union had killed off a penalty on Byron Smith. The
Dutchmen played terrible defense on a power play at the end of the
period, allowing 2 shorthanded goals in 23 seconds. The first was
Richard breaking in alone, and the next when Bill Railton gave up the
puck in front of Gallant to Brent Wilde. Instead of going to the
break down 4-1 or 4-1, it was 6-1. Too much for Union to overcome in
the third period.

The 3rd started with some good chances by Union, but Baker and the
Colgate defense played well. Flowers finally scored for the Dutchmen
at 6:13 when Baker let out a big rebound, but that just made it 6-2.
The game was officially over for Union when Bill Railton took a
major/game misconduct at 12:44. Richard scored his 5th goal on the
power play that followed on a shot from the blue line that beat Luigi
Villa, who had replaced Gallant at the start of the period. Things
started to get rough. The Dutchmen were very frustrated, and Craig
Ferrero tackled Fahey from behind after a whistle. Somehow, both
players ended up with 2:00 plus a 10-minute misconduct. Chris Albert
was able to get a shorthanded goal for Union late in the game, but
Colgate got the point back when Wilde scored with 29 seconds left.

The loss extended Union's losing streak to 6 games. The lopsided shot
totals from early in the season have improved, as Union was outshot
just 33-31 in the game. But the goaltending, which kept the Dutchmen
in early season games against teams like Harvard and Vermont, has not
kept up the pace from the early games. Union has allowed 6 or more
goals in each of the last 6 games, and 8 goals in each of the last 3.
Special teams has been a big problem as well. Union is now 10 for 69
on the power play, and have killed 70.3% of penalties (57 of 81).

Colgate is now 2-4 in the ECAC, 5-8-1 overall. Union falls to 0-8 in
the league, 1-10 overall. The Dutchmen will travel to Yale and
Princeton next weekend. Their next home game is against RPI on the
25th. Colgate will be home for games against Dartmouth and Vermont
next weekend.
