Summary:
Cornell scored 5 1st period goals, 4 within 2:11, and went on to beat
Union 8-1 in an ECAC League Game. It was the first meeting between
the two teams since February 11, 1942, when Cornell won 10-1. The
first 5 minutes went very well for Union, when they outshot Cornell
6-0, but in the next 55, not much went right. The sellout crowd of
2504 included about 1000 Cornell fans (if not more) and a band from
Cornell.
Things started well for Union, with a power play early in the game.
The Dutchmen got some good shots on Cornell goalie Parris Duffus, but
couldn't score. Cornell scored first when Alex Nikolic got the puck
alone in front of Luigi Villa at 5:14. Cornell was unsuccessful on
two power plays in the first half of the period, but Union was able to
get two shorthanded chances from Craig Ferrero and Tim Cregan. At
11:17, the Union defense left Tyler McManus alone in front of Villa,
and he scored easily. Almost immediately off the next faceoff,
Union's Matt Kelley seemed to cover the wrong man when Cornell was
breaking in. This left Russ Hammond skating in alone. He took a pass
from Ettles, and beat Villa again, just 32 seconds after the last
goal. Less than a minute later, sloppy Union play at center ice
allowed Jason Vogel to get a good shot on Villa and score once again
at 12:45. Coach Delventhal immediately called time out, and replaced
Villa with Mike Gallant, but things didn't go much better for Gallant.
Cornell skated through Union's defense and scored on the first shot
Gallant faced. The Dutchmen were finally able to score, with the help
of a 5-on-3 power play, on Chris Albert's 2nd goal of the year.
Most of the second period was spent trading power plays, and both
teams had some very good scoring chances. Gallant was playing very
well for Union, but with Wally Bzdell in the box, he only got a piece of a
shot by Geoff Bumstead, and it deflected off the crossbar into the
net. Then at 17:28 with Scott Whitney off for Union, Cornell came in
2 on 1 with Bill McKenna back, and scored again for a 7-1 lead.
Cornell switched goalies at the start of the 3rd, with Bandurski
replacing Duffus. A bench minor on Union for too many men on the ice
carried into the 3rd period. Just 17 seconds in, Todd Chambers scored
on a rebound to make it 8-1. The rest of the period saw both teams
with a few power play chances. Union had a 4-minute power play, but
kept having passes broken up.
This was the first real blowout of the year for Union. Even in the
games at Clarkson and SLU, they weren't outplayed this badly.
Everyone knew there would be nights like this for a first-year
Division I team, but Coach Delventhal and the players know that they
are not as bad as they showed against Cornell.
The Cornell fans who were at the game were enthusiastic. They made a
lot more noise than the Union fans, but an 8-1 score will do that.
Most of the cheers coming from the Cornell section were new to
Achilles. I did notice that a lot of the cheers were the same ones I
heard at RPI last weekend. So who gets to chant "Let's Go Red!"
tonight up in Troy?
Although the crowd was listed as a sellout of 2504, there were more
than 2504 people in the rink. Most seats were packed, and more people
were standing. Tonight's crowd should be more for Union, as students
are returning from break for classes Monday.
Cornell is 3-2-2 in the ECAC and 3-4-2 overall, while Union remains in
last place in the ECAC with an 0-7 league record, 1-9 overall. Union
plays Colgate at home tonight at 7, and Cornell travels to RPI.
