I don't have a box (the paper didn't arrive this morning!) and I will
be busy all day, so here is a short report. The game was on TV back
here in Madison, so I got to see it...

Wisconsin took a 1-0 lead in the first minute of the game, when Dan
Plante took a pass at about center ice, crossing from his right to his
left, raced past a defenseman, and put in a backhander from about 10
feet out, on the goalie's right.

North Dakota tied the score on a powerplay (their third straight),
Wisconsin made it 2-1, and North Dakota tied it up again. Wisconsin had
a short powerplay at the end of the first period, but the score
remained tied.

The period saw lots of up-and-down action, and the difference was the
goalies. Derksen was very good for Wisconsin, and North Dakota's goalie
(sorry, no name right now) was not as sharp.

The second period was very very busy. At about the 2 minute mark,
Wisconsin was awarded a penalty shot. Kelly Fairchild was ALL ALONE
about 10 feet out to the goalie's left, the goalie was sprawled on the
ice (having lost his stick trying to poke the puck away), and all
Fairchild had to do was put the puck in the net. A North Dakaota player
slid directly for the post, dislodging the net, just before Fairchild
scored. Buzz Christiansen instantly called the penalty shot, but it
took at least five minutes (maybe more) of arguing before it happened.

One of the radio announcers thought that Buzzy could have and should
have just awarded the goal, but he couldn't find the rule in the book.
Captains from both teams were arguing, and eventually, both coaches.
At one point, they may have been arguing over who could take the
penalty shot. Eventually, Wisconsin's Jason Zent took the shot, and
scored easily. Wisconsin and North Dakota continued to argue about
something, but it was 3-2, Wisconsin.

Wisconsin took 4-2 and 5-2 leads, North Dakota came back to make it
5-3, Wisconsin made it 6-3, North Dakota came back to make it 6-4.
Wisconsin got three more goals. I think it was one in the second and
two in the third.

More detailas later,
