In answer to Mike M's query:

It is my understanding that both MSU-Waterloo and Maine-Calgary games of
the Great Western Freezeout are counted as exhibitions in view of the
NCAA limit on games and the way games against Canadian (and other) teams
are counted by the NCAA rules. This is the 3rd year of the Freezeout and
the tournament has always been set up to ensure "exhibition" counting when
a team had a game limit problem. I don't recall the pairings right offhand
but you could look at previous pairings and "see" those situations.

I don't know what Maine's situation is this year in that regard. I don't
think MSU had a problem as it turned out because with the rescheduling we
lost a game with Boston Univ which could not be rescheduled after the NCAA
recognized an earlier contract, but at the time of the tournament set-up
it would have been a consideration.

In any case, Ron Mason made a note at a Blue Line Club meeting that the
game would be an exhibition and stats would not be counted in the NCAA.
You would also have seen a lot of line-shuffling and different players
dressed for that game which would not have happened otherwise.
