Constantly I have heard (read) about the less than adequate refereeing that
is occurring during the college season. I know that there are some high
quality referees who do a great job, just as there are those who do a
consistently bad job.

My own personal opinion correlates the referee's calling of the game to the
"attitude" the referee has. I have noticed from playing, watching, and even
starting to referee that some guys just think that because they have the
bands on, they are the law! How untrue.

I know as fans we can get caught up in the emotion of the game, but I can
tell you "how" most penalties are called.

1. Did the offense result in a change of puck possession? Yes---Penalty
2. Did the offense create/stop a scoring opportunity? Yes---Penalty
3. Was the offense obviously against the rules? Well, you know....

I don't think that there are too many referees who have their favorite
teams, but usually it's the coaches that have the most impact. Watch an
experienced coach get a hold of a rookie referee and see how the game turns
out!

I know referees can get everyone irate, but we must remember this, they
can't see everything, although we wish they could. Sometimes being on the
ice it is difficult to see through a maze of players to notice a penalty.

They try to do a good job. How can you tell if the referee did a good job?
At the end of the game you won't know his name!!!
