Summary:

St. Lawrence jumped out to an early lead, and Union couldn't come all
the way back, as the Saints beat the Dutchmen 7-3, in the first game
between the teams since 1986. SLU was led by a hat trick from Lee
Albert, and four points from Mike Lappin (1-3).

St. Lawrence jumped all over the Dutchmen in the first period, a bad
trend for Union in recent games. By the end of the first period, the
Saints had a 4-0 lead, and had outshot Union 16-4.

The second period started out no better for Union, as Albert's 3rd
goal of the game made it 5-0. The Dutchmen got on the board when Rick
Clifford scored just after a Union power play expired at 6:03. The
teams spent most of the rest of the 2nd period skating with men in the
penalty box. Union was able to kill off almost a full minute of a 5
on 3 SLU power play, but not without some help from the post and the
crossbar.

Union came out very strong in the 3rd period. Bill Railton scored at
3:23 to pull Union to 5-2, and Craig Ferrero scored on a breakaway at
10:58 to make the score 5-3. This goal seemed to wake up the Saints.
Less than a minute later, Spencer Meany gave SLU their 3-goal lead
back. Union had some good scoring chances on a power play, but
couldn't get the puck past Giroux again. Mike Lappin gave St.
Lawrence their 7th goal when he beat Luigi Villa off a faceoff at
17:28.

St. Lawrence improves to 5-1 in the ECAC and 7-3-1 overall, and the
Dutchmen fall to 0-5 in the ECAC, 1-6 overall. Union obviously is not
going to win many games when they fall behind 5-0, as they did against
both Clarkson and St. Lawrence this weekend. They also allowed over
40 shots on goal again, after holding Clarkson to 32. However, the
way they fought back in each game will win some games. Union will now
go on holiday break for 3 weeks. Their next game is against RPI in
the first round of the RPI Invitational on Dec 27. This game will
count in the ECAC standings. A win over RPI would move Union out of
last place in the ECAC.

In the other North Country game, RPI gave Clarkson a scare, but
Clarkson's Todd Marchant scored in OT to beat the Engineers 4-3. The
Knights remain unbeaten in the ECAC at 6-0. RPI came back from down
2-0 and 3-1 in the third period to force the overtime. RPI outshot
Clarkson 37-18. When it was announced that RPI had tied Clarkson late
in the 3rd period, the fans at the Union-SLU game started to chant
"RPI" hoping for the upset.
