*************************************************************************
This was a good close game that featured some curious strategy and
a battle royale in the final two minutes. By the way, on rec.sport.hockey
there is an ongoing debate about the role of fighting in the NHL. Before
this game I thought to myself how relatively rare college hockey fights have
become. Well this games' main card may not have been of NHL quality (?) but
it was jarring reminder that fights do still occasionally occur.
The Badgers took a 3-1 lead after two periods based on some strong
goaltending by Duane Derksen and a key shorthanded goal by frosh Jamie
Spencer. CC came out strong in the 3rd period and got a quick goal to cut the
lead to one. Chris Tucker got the eventual game winner on a nice power play
at the 7:19 mark. Tucker and Barry Richter passed the puck back and forth
2 or 3 times at the top right side of the zone before Tucker blasted a shot
that cleanly beat the surprised CC tender Paul Frank. After this goal CC
played some of their best hockey of the weekend. Steve Strunk pulled back
another goal for CC at the halfway mark. CC continued to force numerous
 difficult
saves from Derksen.
The curious strategy came with 1:19 left in the game. There was a
faceoff just outside the UW zone. CC coach Brad Buetow called a timeout.
When CC returned they had pulled their goalie. The first faceoff resulted
in the puck being lifted into the crowd. The second faceoff though was pushed
toward the far side of the rink and Badger Dan Plante beat the CC players to
the puck at the CC blue line. He quickly pushed a backhander that found the
empty net. Why didn't Buetow wait until after the faceoff to pull his goalie?
It would probably only waste 5-10 seconds to send the extra attacker out after
waiting to see who won the faceoff. There were 79 seconds left why take the
risk of a quick and cheap empty netter.
In the remaining time after this goal CC did get the puck in the UW
zone and applied a lot of pressure with the extra attacker. Derksen made a
save and *SHAZAM* all players on the ice were magically transformed into WWF
Wrestling Federation stars. Everyone paired off and there was a little ice
wrestling but I didn't see any real punches thrown. Cause of this fracas
(take your pick): (1) CC player slashed Derksen after he made the save,
(2) UW and CC players in bearhug position somersault into the net, or (3)
really friendly old guys mannings the doors in the penalty box tell great jokes.
Referee Greg Shepard managed to cool things down (or so he thought).
He handed out 4-min roughing and 10-min misconduct penalties to Harwell and
Zent(UW) and to Reynard and Jaraczewski(CC). Derksen got 2-min for leaving the
crease. Time of penalties 19:33.
Another faceoff, the teams are skating 3-on-3 and CC pulls their goalie.
CC coughs up the puck in the UW zone and Frosh Brian Rafalski skates almost the
length of the ice before putting in his first collegiate goal.
At the drop of the puck on the ensuing faceoff Tucker(UW) and Block(CC)
slash each other. Then these two drop gloves and go at it for real. One of
the poor linesmen jumped in between the two wildly flailing combatants. It
 didn't
last that long and happily time had run out while the two fought. Both fighters
received the expected 5-min major, fighting, and DQ. For those of you still
with me that is 68 minutes of penalties in the last 27 seconds of play.
The Badgers now have a few weeks off before they return to action
after Christmas in the Badger Showtime in Milwaukee. Other teams in the tourney
are Yale, Maine(ouch), and U. of Toronto.
