MTU and NMU are not Div. I schools; they play hockey at the D-I
level, but their over-all athletic programs are not classified as
D-I.  The general rule here is that a D-II or D-III school can play
ONE sport at a higher level (not basketball or football).  But D-I
schools cannot play any sport at a D-II or D-III level.
 
Actually, I should re-phrase the principle.  A D-I school can
participate in a particular sport at a lower level.  However, it must
remain in compliance with all D-I regulations (including eligibility,
etc.), and -- if it does not play a sufficient number of contests
against other D-I programs in that sport, it is not eligible for
post-season play in that sport at the D-I level.  (And, since it is
not a D-II or D-III school, it is not eligible for post-season play
at the -II or -III level either).
