Summary:

The Union Dutchmen continue to play well, but this time it was good
enough for their first win of the season as they crushed Concordia
University 10-3 at Achilles Rink. Union, playing for the first time
following a 2 week exam break, thoroughly outplayed the Stingers.
With the students on December break, the crowd was small and quiet.
Many people there didn't seem to react to anything. Maybe they didn't
understand the game, or maybe they wewre just mourning the football
team's loss in the Div III Football Playoffs earlier in the day. It
was probably because the Pep Band wasn't there....

Union started out well, with a good power play early in the period.
They got five shots on goalie Martin Parrot, but he was able to stop
them all. Union kept the pressure on, and Tim Cregan was able to
score at 5:23 and then again on the power play at 9:33. Union did
allow 2 breakaways late in the first, the second leading to a Marc
Morin goal. Union outshot Concordia 20-10 in the period.

Union also dominated the second period, with Kevin Sullivan and Scott
Whitney each notching their first goals of the year. Craig Ferrero
added his fourth of the year to chase Parrot and to give Union a 5-1
advantage at the second intermission.

Union couldn't get to Scott Donaldson for the first half of the third
period, and Craig Johnson was able to pull the Stingers to 5-2 midway
through the 3rd period. But Union got a power play at 11:56, and Bill
Railton scored just 6 seconds later. At this point, Concordia was
getting frustrated, and started to take some dumb penalties. Union
took advantage and piled on the points, capped off when Tim Cregan
completed his hat trick at 19:23.

Union has played well all season, but this was the first time they
outplayed an opponent this year. They won faceoffs, got plenty of
good shots on goal, and stayed away from the bad penalties. At one
point in the third period, one of the Concordia players tried to get
into a little fight with Union's Wally Bzdell. Wally simply pointed
to the scoreboard and skated away. One problem that stood out was the
3 breakaways given up by the Union defense, although only one led to a
goal. This week's "Scott Whitney Award" for sloppy defense is shared
by defenseman Bill McKenna and Whitney himself for their play with
Union on a 5-on-3 power play late in the third period. The two of
them gave up the puck repeatedly, the last time leading to Concordia's
3rd goal.

Union improves its overall record to 1-4-0 (0-3-0 ECAC), and Concordia
falls to 7-12-0. Concordia was by far the slowest and sloppiest
opponent for the Dutchmen this year. Union will get another taste of
the best of the ECAC when they make their first ever North Country
trip, playing at Clarkson Friday and St. Lawrence Saturday.
