PLAYER OF THE YEAR
C Brendan Morrison JR Michigan
If only he were healthy! Morrison registered 18-30--48 in 24
injury-marred games. This was one of the closest PotY
votes in recent memory, as well it should have been. Morrison
becomes the seventh consecutive forward to win the award.
Voting (1st-2nd-3rd--points): Morrison (4-2-3--56) Keith Aldridge
LSSU (3-1-3--41) Marc Magliarditi WMU (2-3-0--35) Tom Askey
OSU (2-1-4--33) Anson Carter MSU (0-3-1--17) Cody Bowtell
UAF (0-1-0--5).

I assume that the "one nominee per team" rule that applies
to the "Best" awards, applies universally. For example, CCHA
scoring champ Kevin Hilton (Michigan) couldn't receive a PotY
vote because Morrison was the team nominee.

ROOKIE OF THE YEAR
G Marc Magliarditi FR Western Michigan
Puh-lease. This was a no-brainer. Mags is already tied for the
CAREER lead in CCHA shutouts. And, it's back-to-back for
netminders following Michigan's Marty Turco last season.
Voting: Magliarditi (9-1-0--95) Randy Robitaille MU (2-7-1--57)
Mike York MSU (0-3-5--25) Tony Kolozsy UIC (0-0-3--6) Dan
Harrison OSU (0-0-1--2) Brian Urick UND (0-0-1--2).

COACH OF THE YEAR
Bill Wilkinson Western Michigan
Given his 1985-86 title, Wilkie is the early favorite for the award
in 2005-06 as well. I'd still give this to MSU's Ron Mason, who
squeezed all he could out of the Spartans. When I think of WMU's
success, I think of Magliarditi...not Wilkinson.
Voting: Wilkinson (5-3-2--69) Ron Mason MSU (3-4-1--52) John
Markell OSU (2-3-2--39) Jeff Jackson LSSU (1-0-2--14) Red
Berenson UM (0-1-1--7) Dave Poulin UND (0-0-1--2) Buddy
Powers BGSU (0-0-1--2). One third place vote vacated.

BEST OFFENSIVE DEFENSEMAN
Keith Aldridge SR Lake Superior
An argument can be made for any of the top three, but I'm glad
this went to the lone senior...by a surprisingly large margin.
Voting: Aldridge (8-1-0--85) Andy Roach FSU (3-5-2--59) 1994-95
winner Kelly Perrault BGSU (0-4-6--32) Steve Duke WMU
(0-1-1--7) Dan Boyle MU (0-0-1--2) Blake Sloan UM (0-0-1--2).

BEST DEFENSIVE DEFENSEMAN
Mike Matteucci SR Lake Superior
Is there a better award on the planet? I personally wanted a
repeat for 1994-95 winner Steven Halko (Michigan), but Coach
Berenson choose to recognize Harold Schock with the UM
nomination. It'll be interesting to see who gets the Michigan
nomination next year, Schock or Blake Sloan. Anyway,
Matteucci is deserving. For that matter, Keith Aldridge is
deserving, but LSSU couldn't nominate both of them. I'd put
the three Wolverines and two Lakers in the CCHA's top
seven along with Darren Maloney (WMU) and Chad Ackerman
(BGSU). I'm surprised that Chris Bogas received the MSU
nomination. I've been hard on Bogas lately, not because
he's not a solid player (he is), but IMO the attention given
him is out of proportion with respect to the other Spartan D's.
I'd have nominated Tyler Harlton or Jeff Kozakowski. And,
I have to clap my hands for cult icon Craig Paterson (OSU).
Paterson can play on my team any day...or, at least sit next
to me on the bench. :-)
Voting: Matteucci (6-3-0--75) Darren Maloney WMU (2-3-3--41)
**Harold Schock** UM (1-2-4--28) Chad Ackerman BGSU
(1-1-2--19) Chris Bogas MSU (1-1-0--15) Craig Paterson OSU
(0-1-1--7) Deuce Wynes UIC (0-0-1--2).

BEST DEFENSIVE FORWARD
Bates Battaglia SO Lake Superior
Well, I said earlier this week that I liked Kevin Hilton (UM) or
John Madden (UM) followed by Anson Carter (MSU) and
Mike Peron (UIC) with Battaglia being a future winner. Little
did I know the future would come so soon. :-) Hilton was the
top returning vote getter, but the Michigan nomination went
to shorthanded goal whiz Madden, who finished a distant
second.
Voting: Battaglia (8-1-0--95) John Madden UM (1-3-4--33)
Anson Carter MSU (1-1-2--19) Mike Johnson BGSU (1-1-2--19)
Shawn Zimmerman WMU (0-3-1--17) Mike Peron UIC (0-2-1--12)
Sean Sutton OSU (0-0-1--2). Note: The CCHA release is missing
a first place vote, so I gave it to Carter as part of his 19 points.
Hence, the above point totals are correct but the actual votes
may not be.

TERRY FLANAGAN MEMORIAL AWARD
D Jon Gaskins SO Michigan State
For his resolve in accepting and meeting serious personal
challenges. Gaskins suffered a serious knee injury on 17
February 1995. He rehabilitated all summer only to be diagnosed
with two blood clots in his knee and several in his lungs on
30 September. He finally returned to the Spartan lineup during
the GLI over the holidays. (A great kid and story that I'm not
giving enough space to given the length of this message
already.)

Congratulations to all of the nominees and winners!
