A number of people noted last week how well goalie Jim Carey is
doing with the Washington Caps. Some also included an account of an
incident in their game with the Whalers last week in which Joe Juneau
was injured in the eye accidentally by Glen Wesley's stick. What
happened next shocked a lot of people. Civic Center sound man Al Patterson
unveiled a tape of a baby crying loudly which rightly infuriated the
Washington team. They went on to pound the Whalers 5-0.
I wanted to point out that Jeff Jacobs of the Hartford Courant
wrote after that game that the episode mortified Whalers management who
sent Sr. Vice President Russ Gregory down to the Washington locker room
after the game to issue an official apology. One thing that cannot be
said about the current Whalers ownership is that they lack class. The
principal owner is now Peter Karmanos, CompuWare chairman, and father
of Jason Karmanos current player at Harvard. The management team he has
brought to Hartford exudes a quiet competence which has long been missing
here.
