One more sieve story...
My freshman year at RPI (89-90) a friend and I road-tripped to the Boston Garden
to see the ECAC Semis. Without going into the story of our trying to find the
Garden, and the interesting people we met in our attempts, let's just say we
were a little late.
We were heading up one of the ramps into the Garden and heard... the dreaded
"Sieve" chant. "They're calling [Sean] Kennedy a sieve!" So we raced up, only
to find that RPI had scored, and suddenly all was okay. Point being, I think
the chant rattles the fans far more than the players. Especially the silly
freshman fans. :)
Being a somewhat more educated hockey fan now, I find that I have trouble with
the sieve chant when the opposing goalie's been standing on his head, and gives
up a goal on a 5-3 or something. However, there's a certain pleasure in doing a
mindless sieve chant.
Stupid? Maybe. Unsportsmanlike? No.
