As an aside, UW-Madison has, for a number of years, a proposal to build a
General Use Facility which could, in addition to convocation and
basketball, also host hockey events. The proposed capacity varies
depending on location, but is expected to be in the general neighborhood of
12,000.

However, this proposal is met with staunch resistance from both the City
and the County governments. The City would object the facility being built
on anywhere which could "erode" its tax base. The County fears the loss of
revenues resulting from the Badgers' departure from the Dane County
Coliseum. There is the added fear that the GUF could offer potential
competition for other future bookings by a superior facility in the
neighborhood.

So, the 8,500 "always full" attendance is likely to stand for a few years
yet when it comes to Badger hockey in Madison.
