Summary:

Union finished their regular season with a 5-2 win over Cornell at
Achilles Rink. With the win, the Dutchmen finish in 6th place in the
league and will play RPI in the ECAC quarterfinals next weekend.

Union took a 1-0 lead on Greg Buchanan's first goal of the season.
Russ Monteith extended the lead to 2-0 with a power play goal in the
middle of the 1st. Monteith and Jeff Jiampetti each had power play
goals in the 2nd.

Cornell came back with 2 power play goals of their own to make it 4-2,
but Jiampetti scored into an empty net, giving him his 5th goal and
7th point on the weekend. Luigi Villa was outstanding at times in net
for the Dutchmen, making 28 saves.

I'm sure Bill Fenwick (who I met during the first intermission) will
have more details on the game.

The crowd was one of Union's better ones - almost a sellout. The
Cornell showing at Achilles was much smaller than the past 2 years.
The "Oh say can *U* see" during the National Anthem has really caught
on, although I wish people would learn to keep quiet during the rest
of the song. One of my favorite moments was when 3 Cornell players
were being sent to the locker room after a late scuffle in front of
the Cornell bench, and the crowd did 3 rapid-fire "Ahhhhhhhhh...See
ya!" cheers as each left the ice. Unfortunately, there were also some
idiots who felt the need to throw things into the section of Cornell
fans behind the Cornell bench when they were celebrating Cornell
goals, but for the most part it was a great Union crowd.

There was a ceremony before the game honoring Jiampetti, the team's
senior captain and only remaining player from Union's Division III
days. It was nice to see him have such a great weekend in his last
home series.

Union finishes with a 10-9-3 league record, good for 6th place, and
are riding a 9-game unbeaten streak into the playoffs. (Who would
have ever believed that about a month ago??) The Dutchmen also have a
14-9-4 overall record. This also marks the first time that Union has
swept an ECAC weekend series at home. By passing Colgate for 6th
place, Union earns a bye in the preliminary round and will face RPI in
Troy next weekend in the ECAC quarterfinals. It should be a great
series with Union coming in playing so well and with 2 hot goalies and
with RPI finally putting it together this weekend as well. Now to get
a hold of some tickets...
