Michigan Tech 3 Michigan State 2 (consolation game)
Michigan 3 Maine 1 (championship game)
No scoring after 1 period; 1-1 after 2. Michigan scored in the 3rd
and saw it hold up as neither side mustered many shots on goal. With
just over a minute to go, Coach Shawn Walsh sends co-captain Scott
Pellerin over to the referee ... yep, you guessed it ... measure
the stick of Denny Felsner ... "the legend continues" chuckled the
Maine radio announcer. It was not a legal stick resulting in a 2
minute minor (resulting in a Maine power play) and a 10 minute
misconduct for Felsner (out for the remainder of the game).
Maine controlled the puck much of the next 30 seconds and, with about
30 seconds to go in the game, pulled goalie Garth Snow for a 6th
attacker. Unlike the Denver comeback, the effort fell short as
Michigan cleared the puck and scored an empty netter with a few
seconds remaining.
Sorry that I didn't catch the all-tournament team except Maine placed 3
on the squad (Keith Carney, Martin Robitaille and Jim Montgomery) ...
goalie Shields for Michigan was the tourney MVP with a 1.00 GAA for the
2 games.
