Torpedo Yaroslavl is one of Russia's premier hockey teams. They are
currently [as of 12/17] in second place in the prestigious Russian Elite
League.
During the 1993-94 season, they finished with the fourth most wins in the
League, ahead of such well-known teams as the Soviet Wings and Red Army.
Under the direction of head Coach Sergei Nikolaev, Torpedo has become a
virtual scoring powerhouse. Last season's squad boasted four of the top six
scorers in the Elite League. In addition, their starting goaltender had the
second lowest goals against average in the League.
Founded in 1959, Torpedo is one of the most popular teams in Russia. In
fact, nearly all of their games are complete sellouts. Their team colors
are red, white and blue, and Torpedo's team logo features a Russian bear
carrying an ax.
Led by their players ont he current Russian National team, forward Andrei
Tarasenko and defensemen Dmitri Krasotkin and Oleg Komissarov, Torpedo is
widely considered their country's next great championship dynasty. Winning
5-4, they were they the only team to defeat the NHL Russian All-Stars that
toured the Elite League in November.
