Information taken from the Minnesota Daily 5/17/91.

Sixteen current and former Gopher hockey players will have a shot at
earning a spot on the 1992 U.S. Olympic hockey team, USA Hockey officials
announced in Colorado Springs, Colo. Larry Johnson, general manager of the
1992 Olympic team, said that 11 members of the 1990-91 Gopher hockey team and
another five former Minnesota players would be invited to either the U.S.
Olympic Festival in June or a professional player tryout, which begins next
 Wednesday.

The professional players camp, which begins May 22 in Lake Placid, N.Y.,
includes Dean Williamson, Steve MacSwain, Marty Nanne, Peter Hankinson, and
John Blue. Three more players -- Scott Bjugstad, Lance Pitlick and Brett Strot
-- could still be added to the 40-player, four-goaltender tryout roster.

Former Gopher goaltender Robb Stauber, a Hobey Baker Award winner with
Minnesota in 1988, was also invited to play in Lake Placid. But knee surgery
one month ago will force Stauber to miss the camp.

The eleven players of the 1990-91 Gophers who were asked to play at the U.S.
Olympic Festival in St. Cloud, Minn., June 18-29 are: defensemen Doug Zmolek,
Mike Muller, Chris McAlpine, Travis Richards, Luke Johnson, and forwards Trent
Klatt, Ben Hankinson, Grant Bischoff, Larry Olimb, Ken Gernander, and Craig
 Johnson.

Tom Pederson another defenseman who quit the Gopher squad to play in the World
Hockey Championships last month, was scratched from the Olympic Fest roster.
It was felt that he has shown the USA Hockey officials what he can do already.
Pederson will be invited to the final stage of the tryouts August 1-10 in St.
 Cloud.

USA Hockey coaches will select the best 40 players from both the pro camp and
the Olympic Festival and invite them to the final phase of the training camp
in August. There, 1992 Olympic coach Dave Peterson and his staff will trim the
roster by 10 players. Further cuts will take place as the 1992 Olympic games
 in Albertville, France, approach.

A total of 20 players and two goaltenders will make up the 1992 Olympic team
when the games begin in February. USA Hockey made the decision last year to
allow professional players to play in the Olympics, but the bulk of the team
will be composed of college players and minor-league pros.

Other former WCHA players who will attend tryouts in Lake Placid next week
include Jim Johanson, Steve Rohlik, and Rob Mendel of Wisconsin; Sandy Smith
and Shaun Toumie of Minnesota-Duluth; and Damian Rhodes of Michgan Tech. The
final 1992 Olympic team roster won't be announced until about two weeks before
 the Olympics begin.
